If we lived under a dictatorship a book like this would never be possible, although we may read it with a smile. However, we must not get too comfortable: despotic and totalitarian governments are a reality in many countries. Published now with new illustrations, this work was conceived and written forty years ago, and still remains relevant today.

This book was published for the first time in 1977. The dictator Franco had just died, and the country began a journey of democratic changes, of which we can only say we have travelled a short distance, and through which we must keep moving forward.

If we lived under a dictatorship, a book like this, which we might read with a smile, would never be possible. However, we must not get too comfortable: dictatorships are still a reality in many countries today, while others that claim to be democratic, unashamedly recreate many characteristics of totalitarian governments: there are high levels of corruption, they fail to respect human rights, laws are made behind citizens’ backs, and those who are in charge never provide satisfactory explanations.
